To the moon and back again

Overview

Cryptocurrency is often seen as risky and liquid, with everyday people usually steering clear while business and finance audiences seek to understand and profit from the space. Within Cryptocurrency, there is a subsection even more volatile - Meme coins. Meme coins are currencies that are made as a joke that hold next to no financial value after its first hour of release. Often, Meme coins are created as rugpulls from people online to make fast cash from people who are willing to risk their finances just because it’s funny. To properly articulate the ridiculousness of the subject of Meme coins, pop culture icons walk you through the experience, speaking about what the subject of many of these meme coins are like a TikTok video while also intentionally taking the viewer out of this serious environment to understand how outlandish it is to invest your money in something so immaterial and unserious.

Target

We targeted people who understood the very very basic idea of crypto, but people who were uneducated about meme coins. However, this audience also does play into people who are very familiar with meme coins, to expose the darker side of them that the viewer may not have thought about. One of our challenges is that we did not have the time within the experience to fully educate someone completely unaware of what crypto is to catch them up to speed on what the experience is. The topic is too nuanced and uninteresting for us to be able to communicate the detailed, basic rundown which was a pain point throughout the process. Another pain point was the holograms. My partner designed and assembled these to physically display some of the coins in a museum exhibit, which was a huge usability and assembly challenge. Placing them in a way that communicated all our points while still feeling natural without using paragraphs of text was a challenge to position everything physically, but managed to build something that has the best of all worlds. I designed the motion video on the projector and organized/help film the XR portion of the experience.

Throughout this process, we utilized these physical hologram boxes which use mirror projections, with Adobe Aero’s XR features, as well as a projector showcasing a motion video explaining the basics of crypto and hard proof of the volatility and uncertainty of just some of the most popular meme coins.

Conclusion

This provided good exposure to filming short videos with a narrative, as well as building off of my XR experience, but also designing for all demographics and not just anyone with no disabilities at any height. Making a publicly available exhibition forced me to think about the user experience in a way I never have before, which is always essential as a designer.
